The town of Darjeeling is the headquarters of Darjeeling district and is situated in the northern part of West Bengal. The 10.57 sq km area of this town, located at an altitude of 2,042 m, has been being explored by huge number of tourists and travelers since the British era. It used to be addressed as the ‘summer retreat of British people’ those days. Tourism has always been an inseparable part with this popular hill station of India and one of the main attractions here is the wonderful sight of higher peaks of Eastern Himalayas like Mt Kanchenjunga, along with lakes, waterfalls, hill tops, historical and religious places and so on.

Batasia Loop

The Batasia Loop is a spiral railway created to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. At this point, the track spirals around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop.

Tiger Hill

No tourist ever misses to visit this place at a distance of 32 km from Darjeeling. Tiger Hill is actually a hilltop; from where watching the sun rising from behind the wavy mountains is an experience that can never be forgotten. On a clear day, Mt Kanchenjunga seems to be taking a bath in the crimson ray of the rising sun.

Senchal Lake

At around 10 km distance from Darjeeling town, the Senchal Lake is an appropriate location for picnic or short get-together. Situated very close to the Tiger Hill, the ambience of this lake is very pleasant. You can also visit the golf-club near to the lake, with 9 golf courts.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is blessed with the name of Sir Tenzing Norgay, who was the first field instructor here. Serving as a pioneer to build mountaineering as a respected sport, HMI has a museum in its compound, called Everest Museum, with photos and scaling equipments of brave climbers of Mt Everest.

Observatory Hill

One of the main points of attraction in Darjeeling is the spectacular view of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding from the top of this hill near Chowrasta square. The Bhutia Busty Monastery was previously located here before it was rebuilt in Bhutia Busty in 1861. Today, people come to visit the Mahakal Temple here.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

This zoo is flourished with flora and fauna of Himalayan region and popularly known as Darjeeling Zoo. Tourists as well as researchers find this place exquisite because of breeding and conservation program of three endangered animal species –red panda, snow leopard and Tibetan wolf, along with various other animals, birds, trees and plants.

Peace Pagoda

Built by following the architecture of Japanese style, the pagoda was built within 1972-1992. The mission of this pagoda was set to bring and unite all types of human being under one roof of global peace. This pagoda, with 28.5 m height and 23 m diameter, was founded under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii.
